Making an Impact

The Arrowsmith Difference

"The fact that Arrowsmith trains the brain processors that make possible reasoning and rationality, is arguably one of the most important positive developments one could imagine for our world, with its complex problems.”

Full Time and
Part Time Programs - Conquering Learning Issues

For many organizations serving individuals with learning difficulties and learning disabilities, the full suite of Arrowsmith methodology is recommended. Students have an initial assessment determining their unique cognitive profile and receive a customized program of cognitive exercises.

Students then address underlying issues related to attention and executive function, reading and math, auditory processing and memory, communication, reasoning, and emotional intelligence. Organizations can offer Arrowsmith as a full-time option (4 exercises a day, approximately ½ a school day), or as a part-time option (1-3 exercises per week); as a day program or during evenings, weekends, or summer months.

Whatever an organization’s schedule, their Arrowsmith Program means students are fundamentally changing their cognitive ability and accelerating their rate of learning in academic, vocational, emotional, and social skills.

Enhancement Programs - Elevating Performance

Cognitive programming can benefit us all – this model recognizes that no matter our current ability, a stronger cognitive profile means learning and life is more rewarding. These enhancement programs improve function in key aspects of learning and can benefit students with a wide range of abilities.

This format is excellent for organizations looking to meet the needs and potential of different types of students and individuals, and those needing flexible scheduling options. Two enhancement programs are currently available (see Motor Symbol Sequencing and Symbol Relations below for more detail). A minimum of 4 hours per week is involved.

Symbol Relations Enhancement Program

Ideal as students move from concrete to conceptual learning, this exercise strengthens students' understanding of the relationship between ideas. This means students of all abilities experience improvements in:

  • reading comprehension, mathematical reasoning
  • logical thinking, debate, and reflection
  • processing speed
  • flexibility of thought and understanding other points of view

Students typically spend 30 to 40 minutes a day completing the exercise. 4 hours per week is required.

Motor Symbol Sequencing Enhancement Program

Ideal as a foundational years program, this exercise strengthens the automation of motor plans needed in writing, reading and spelling. This means students of all abilities experience improvements in:

  • writing more legibly, neatly, and with ease
  • reading speed
  • copying of material quickly and accurately
  • completing written tests within time limits
  • fewer "careless" errors in reading and writing

Students typically spend 30 to 40 minutes a day completing the exercise, with home practice. 6 hours per week is required.

Whole Cohort Programs - Cognitive Enhancement for All

Designed for elementary and secondary schools to have all students strengthen their cognitive profiles, this model embodies truly innovative education. All students within a class or grade participate together, demonstrating a fully inclusive program where all students benefit.

A comprehensive elementary years model is available where students in grades 1 to 8 engage in a developmentally specific exercise; alternatively, a whole class can engage in enhancing one or two critical functions essential across all domains of learning (see above Motor Symbol Sequencing and Symbol Relations).

Please request further information about the whole school design.

Cognitive Intensive Program – Accelerated Transformation

Featuring the Symbol Relations exercise, this program accelerates students’ ability to understand, reason, process what they read, see and hear. This efficient format involves an intensive schedule where students transform their cognitive ability in just 6-10 weeks. Students younger than 14 are programmed for a total of 90 hours; students 15+ complete 135 hours. Recommended for organizations offering summer programming, or which serve individuals interested in achieving rapid cognitive benefits.

Stand Alone Assessments -  Evaluation Through a Cognitive Lens

The Arrowsmith Assessment identifies up to 19 cognitive functions, measuring the students’ capacity across a 12 point scale resulting in a highly individualized cognitive profile. For many parents and professionals, this can lead to critical understanding of an individual's learning and experience.  For children and adult learners, it can be an illuminating view into one's current reality, and importantly – what is possible with a stronger cognitive profile. Organizations can offer Arrowsmith assessments as a stand-alone option, or as a first step toward enrolment in an Arrowsmith program.
